The 20-20-20 screen break
Every twenty minutes, look twenty feet away for twenty seconds.
Eyes focused on a screen at arm’s length all day get tired. A simple habit gives them a rest: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. Add a few blinks and a neck stretch, and it is a one-minute break.
The steps
- Look away (Look far away): Look out of a window or across the room, at something far away, for twenty seconds.
- Blink (Sitting tall): Blink slowly ten times. Screens make us blink less.
- Palms (Sitting tall): Rub your hands together until they are warm, and rest them over your closed eyes.
- Neck (Neck release): Let your head fall gently to one side, then the other.
Tips
- A timer helps until it is a habit.
- Make your text bigger and your screen less bright than the room.
