Touch typing, one finger at a time

A free course that teaches you to type without looking — every key in the colour of the finger that presses it, and a certificate for every lesson you pass.

Touch typing means typing without looking at the keys. Each finger rests on its own home key — A, S, D and F for the left hand, J, K, L and the semicolon for the right — and reaches from there for the keys in its column. The bumps on F and J let you find home without looking. The course teaches that one rule a key or two at a time.

Every lesson introduces its new keys, shows the finger that presses each one and the reach from its home key, and then gives you drills and real words built only from the keys you have learned. Capitals and the two Shift keys, the number row, the number pad and the symbols each have a unit of their own, so somebody who can already type words can go straight to them.

Pass a lesson at 85% accuracy and its certificate is yours, with your speed, your accuracy and up to three stars on it. Finish a unit and you earn its award — Home Row Hero, Number Ninja, Symbol Sorcerer — and finish the course for the Touch Typist diploma. Every certificate downloads as a PDF.

Every key you miss and every word you stumble on is kept on your device and made into a practice drill until you have typed it cleanly twice. And when you want company, the typing games give everybody the same passage on the same countdown: race the cast of characters, race friends on their own phones and laptops, or pass one keyboard round.
