Which finger for which key?
Touch typing gives every key to one finger. Your fingers rest on the home row — A, S, D and F for the left hand, J, K, L and the semicolon for the right — and each reaches up and down its own column from there. The small bumps on F and J let you find home without looking.
The chart colours every key by the finger that presses it: the little fingers take the outside columns and keys such as Shift, Enter and Backspace, the index fingers take two columns each — F and G, J and H — and the thumbs share the space bar. Press any key, or pick a finger, and the hands show who owns it, from which home key, and with which Shift.
The rules worth remembering
- Return to the home row after every reach.
- Use the Shift key on the other hand from the letter you are capitalising.
- Keep your eyes on the screen — the colours are there to learn from, not to look at forever.
