Dictation
Dictation is the skill of a secretary, a reporter and anybody who has ever taken down a phone message: hear it, and type it. Your browser reads a word, a phrase, a sentence or a number aloud — a price, a year, a phone number — and you type what you heard.
Each answer is marked word by word the moment you enter it, the way a teacher marks a dictation: right, wrong, missed out or put in extra. A word you type wrong joins your practice list.
How to use it
- Choose words, phrases, sentences or numbers, and a speed: slow, normal or quick.
- Press Enter on an empty answer to hear it again.
- Capitals and punctuation do not count unless you ask them to — you cannot hear a comma.
- It uses your browser’s own voices, so it needs no microphone and sends nothing anywhere; a browser without a voice is told so plainly.
