What working from home actually saves, and what it costs
The savings are real and usually overstated. The costs are real and almost always ignored. Here is the full accounting.
Remote work is often discussed as though it were free money. The net position is usually positive, but by a smaller margin than the commute savings alone suggest — and the direction depends on details specific to your household.
What you save
Per month, for someone who previously commuted 20 km each way and ate lunch out:
| Item | Monthly |
|---|---|
| Commute | ₹9,500 |
| Lunches and coffee | ₹5,500 |
| Work clothing and dry cleaning | ₹1,200 |
| Incidental office spending | ₹1,500 |
| Total | ₹17,700 |
₹2.12 lakh a year, which is why the framing feels obvious.
What it costs
| Item | Monthly |
|---|---|
| Electricity, air conditioning and lighting | ₹2,500 |
| Better internet | ₹500 |
| Groceries, from eating every meal at home | ₹3,500 |
| Home office equipment, amortised | ₹1,000 |
| Extra space in rent, if you need a room | ₹5,000 |
| Total | ₹12,500 |
Net saving: about ₹5,200 a month, or ₹62,400 a year. Real, worthwhile, and roughly a quarter of what the gross figure suggested.
The variable nobody prices
Working from home removes the commute, which for many people was the only reliably enforced boundary between work and everything else. Days get longer, not shorter, and the value of the reclaimed time depends entirely on whether it is actually reclaimed.
The saving is only genuine if the ninety minutes becomes something. If it becomes ninety more minutes of work, you have taken a real-terms pay cut and saved on petrol.
The hybrid case
Two or three remote days a week captures most of the commute and food savings while adding much less to the utility and grocery lines, and rarely requires more space. On the pure arithmetic, hybrid is usually the strongest position — which is why it has become the common settlement.
Work out your own position
Two things worth checking
Whether your employer reimburses anything. Internet allowances, equipment budgets and one-time setup payments exist at many companies and go unclaimed because nobody asks.
Whether the time actually returned. Track a normal week's hours. If they went up, the financial saving is not the whole story, and it is worth knowing before treating remote work as a straightforward win.
