Questions people ask
How much should I tip in India?
Where no service charge has been added, 5% to 10% is customary at a casual restaurant and around 10% at a formal one. Service charge, where it appears, is not a government levy and is not compulsory — you are entitled to ask for it to be removed.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
On the pre-tax subtotal. GST is a tax collected by the restaurant on behalf of the government, and tipping on it means tipping the tax.
Is service charge the same as a tip?
No. Service charge is levied by the restaurant and its distribution is at the restaurant's discretion. A tip is voluntary and, in practice, more likely to reach the staff. If a service charge has been added and you leave it, an additional tip is not expected.
