Questions people ask
How is recurring deposit interest calculated?
Each instalment earns interest only from the month it is paid, compounded quarterly. That is why an RD returns noticeably less than an FD of the same total amount at the same rate — your first instalment earns for the full term, your last for one month.
What if I miss an instalment?
Most banks charge a small penalty per ₹100 of the missed instalment and may close the account after several consecutive misses, paying out at a reduced rate. Set a standing instruction rather than relying on remembering.
Is an RD better than a monthly SIP?
They answer different questions. An RD gives a known, guaranteed amount and is right for a goal within about three years. A SIP has no guarantee and can fall in value, but over ten years or more the expected return is far higher. Money you need soon goes in an RD; money you do not, does not.
Is RD interest taxed?
Yes, at your slab rate, and it accrues annually. TDS rules match those for fixed deposits. There is no separate exemption for recurring deposits.
