Questions people ask
What does commuting really cost?
Fuel, maintenance, tyres, insurance, parking, tolls and depreciation. Depreciation is usually the largest and the one people leave out. A 25 km each-way car commute commonly costs ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month once all of it is counted.
Should I include my time?
It is worth pricing, even if you do not add it to the total. Ninety minutes a day is roughly 375 hours a year — around nine working weeks. A job paying ₹50,000 more but adding an hour each way is often a pay cut per hour worked.
Is a car cheaper than a cab for commuting?
Below roughly 1,000 to 1,200 km a month, cabs usually win once depreciation, insurance, parking and maintenance are included. Above that, owning starts to make sense. Most people compare fuel against fare and conclude the opposite.
